Stannard Rock Fishing—
Stannard Rock Reef

Stannard Rock Reef is about 1 square mile in size. That is where the depths
of water are such that a vessel could strike bottom in a storm . This is why
the lighthouse was built here in 1881. The actual fishing area or the top
part of the underwater mountain range extends about 5 miles long and 1 mile
wide on a northeasterly/southwesterly track.
Just north east of the lighthouse and just north of Stannard Rock the water
is only 2 feet deep in places and you should use extreme caution. Stannard
Rock actually protrudes about 4 feet above the surface of the lake. Best areas
to fish are the 18 foot reef just to the west of the lighthouse, and south
and east of the lighthouse. These are the best casting areas especially in
July with a bug hatch going on. You can also proceed to the northeast of the
lighthouse on approximately a 45 degree heading and the bottom will gently
slope down to roughly 140 feet in about 2 miles. In this area there are some
banks and canyons that extend out another 2-3 miles where some come up to
50 feet or so. On the east and west banks of this ridge are good places for
large fish. All throughout this area is good jigging. Just find some fish
on your depth finder, get over them and drop your lines. At the furthest point
of the reef you are about 42 nautical or almost 50 statute miles from Marquette
Harbor. This makes for a 100 mile trip. Make sure you have the fuel.
